California with Len Robbins - July 2011

Everyone was invited but only Len Robbins and I went. The plan was to ride all the great mountain roads around LA and then as far up the coast as we could get with 5 days and 4 nights.

We went up through Julian and to the top of Mt. Palomar on our way to our first night in Temecula. The second day we found some new roads by Hemet and then up to Idyllwild, to Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead, down 138 (great road) to Wrightwood and then the entire length of the Angeles Crest Highway. Then through Santa Paula to Oxnard for the night.

The next day we went to Ojai and up highway 33 and on to Santa Maria. North through Moro Bay and up Highway 1 to Big Sur for gas. We then went back down highway 1 and up the Nacimiento-Fergusson road. I voted this the best road of the trip. It comes out among huge open fields with giant Oak trees in Fort Hunter Liggett. Then to Atascadero for night 3.

We took highway 58 to Taft and then Cerro Noroeste Road to Frazier Park. A 30 mile ride south on I5 took us to the southern end of  Lake Hughes Road and another great road back north to highway 138 and the Rock Inn for lunch. We stayed the night in Yucca Valley.

Our ride home was through Joshua Tree National Park, across I10 and Box Canyon road to the east side of the Salton Sea. We rode past the big sand dunes to join I8 at Yuma. The ride home was hot for a couple of hours and then we ran through a heavy rain shower for about 1 mile that cooled us down.

We rode 2100 miles on some of the best roads anywhere. I could do this once a year and I have almost done that in the past.
